The textile industry and shipping were major industries in the 19th and 20th centuries. Shirt-making in the city dates back as far as 1831, and within 50 years shirt-making in the city was the most successful in the UK, reaching its peak in the 1920s when around 18,000 people were employed in the industry.
In the last 15 years there has been a drive to increase inward investment in the city, more recently concentrating on digital industries, and SMEs are well-established in a diverse range of sectors. Economic successes have included call centres and manufacturing, with companies such as Du Pont and Seagate operating large plants.
