About the City of Derry
Derry City is the regional capital of the North West of Ireland. Its strategic significance is recognised and reinforced in both the Northern Ireland Regional Development Strategy and in the national spatial strategy of the Republic of Ireland. The City is the primary hub in the Derry-Letterkenny Corridor – a key access in the cross-governmental North West Gateway Initiative. As one of the largest councils in Northern Ireland, Derry City Council has a gross revenue budget of approximately £36m, and employs around 650 people who serve a population of 110,000.
Boasting Ireland’s oldest walls and youngest people, Derry City has an attitude to life that sets it apart. A city bubbling with creativity, energy and fun, the pace of its transformation is remarkable: a cascading programme of investment, innovation and world-class events over the next few years has ensured that the city is already becoming famous for pushing back the boundaries of the creative industries and providing a world-class visitor experience. The recent festival opening of the Peace Bridge was just the most recent example of this reservoir of talent. Moreover, as one of the most switched-on European cities, it has recently invested over €30million in digital connectivity, £60million in research and development, £13million in infrastructure, £25million in cultural tourism and public realm, and has over 40 acres of prime riverside sites ready for development.
Despite a challenging history, Derry City is now on the cusp of major transformation, and the City has embarked on a number of step change initiatives in the past two years – you can click on the links to the left to explore some of these areas in greater detail. The Chief Executive & Town Clerk’s role in leading the Council and acting as its ambassador is critical at this time of major change and transformation. He or she will ensure that Council continues to be a catalyst for change both internally and externally, and will oversee the completion of the ongoing change process across the organisation. Our ultimate destination? – to consolidate the City’s position as the Regional Capital of the North West of Ireland.
