Derry District Sports Awards for 2011
The local District Sports Council first met in 1968 but it was not until 1980 that local athletes were recognised through the presentation of the District Sports Council Awards. Since then the number of categories awarded each year has steadily grown from the inaugural awards in 1980 made to Ian Crowe (Rugby) and Roisin Smyth (Athletics), the male and female personalities for that year.
There will be a total of twenty awards to be contested for and will be presented to the successful nominees at a gala presentation night in the City Hotel on Friday 17th February 2012.
The award categories cover male and female competitors, individual and teams, and range across youth, juvenile, senior and master age groups. Also catered for are those individuals who remain firmly in the shadows but without who sport could not exist. The awards categories for “Sports Coach Award” and “Services to Sport Award” have in the past been two of the most eagerly contested awards and it is anticipated that this year will be no different.
Commenting on the forthcoming awards, the Chairman of the Derry District Sports Council, Mr Michael Hutton said “The hard work has been done over the past year by the many and varied sports people from the area who have achieved success in their own disciplines. It is now over to you the public from the Derry City Council area to recognise these achievements and nominate the competitors for the 2011 District Sports Awards.”
