2020 EU targets in sight for Waste Management PlanFriday 27th JanuaryJune 2006 is the deadline for all Local Authorities in Northern Ireland to submit waste management plans for their region outlining how they intend to meet EU targets and directives until 2020. On Thursday 26th January, members of Derry City Council were the first of the seven western authorities to consider the revised options for dealing with municipal waste for 2006 – 2020. These options were prepared on behalf of the North West Regional Waste Management Group by consultants RPS after extensive research and studies identified a series of waste management options designed to ensure EU targets are achieved and that large fines from Europe are avoided. The technical analysis predicts that by 2020 over 300,000 tonnes of waste will be produced annually in the North West and it outlines the options that are available to prevent and dispose of this waste. Members of Derry City Council agreed to consult on these options which include waste prevention, increased recycling and composting, Mechanical Biological Treatment and Energy from waste. It is expected they will be released for public consultation and comment throughout the North West during April 2006. Following consultation and public comments Council will reach a final decision on options. Over the past number of years, investment in waste management represents the largest financial obligation for local authorities and this pattern is set to continue while regional solutions to waste management are implemented. A staged approach over the coming years is necessary to ensure adequate facilities and resources are in place to manage waste in the region and to ensure that EU targets are met. Local Authorities across Northern Ireland are facing similar challenges and choices and it is essential that members of the public participate in the consultation during April 2006 and record their views.
