Council introduced charges for commercial users of Civic Amenity sites

Wednesday 21st November 2007
Derry City Council will introduce new charges for commercial users in respect of non-hazardous wastes deposited at its Civic Amenity/Household Recycling Centres. The public are reminded that the charges will be in place from December 01 2007.

Council presently, operates six of these facilities at various locations across the City Council area. These facilities play an important role in councils waste management system enabling householders to dispose of heavy items of unwanted household waste including for example white goods, garden waste etc. Wastes deposited at these sites are transferred to waste treatment facilities at a cost to Council.

These new arrangements have been set in place to facilitate commercial businesses and to adhere to statutory obligations, which indicate that the Council should put a charge on the service.

The charges applicable are as follows:

Users will pay a fixed fee dependant on vehicle/ container type with commercial users firstly obtaining a pre-paid voucher from the City Treasurers Department, 98 Strand Road before taking waste to the sites

The charges had been kept to a minimum and reflected those costs incurred by Council in processing these wastes.

For more information about these charges, the public are encouraged to contact the City Engineer’s Department, Waste Management Section at Derry City Council on: 028 71 36 5151
