Recycling Week 2008: 2 - 8 June

The 2008 Recycle Week campaign has kicked off, with an emphasis on encouraging people to boost their current recycling efforts even further.

A good first step is pledging to reduce the amount of new plastic bags picked up when shopping by reusing the ones that you have or opting for a bag for life.

Plastic carrier bags are one of the biggest headaches when it comes to waste. Around 13 billion plastic carrier bags are currently used every year in the UK - just under 1.4million every hour.

While eight billion end up in landfill sites, others get blown away, with some ending up in the sea, causing death to marine wildlife.

As part of the Recycling Week campaign, Derry City Council will be giving away hundreds of strong reusable bags to encourage everyone to ditch the plastic bags. These will be offered at the Recycling Stand at Kilfennan Valley Park between 01.00pm and 05.00pm on Friday 6th June.
