Big Weekend to rock Banks of the Foyle
The UK’s City of Culture 2013, Derry-Londonderry, will be taking centre stage in mid May, as some of the most sensational names in the music industry take to the banks of the Foyle for BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend Derry~Londonderry.
The countdown has now officially started for the biggest music extravaganza on the calendar, putting the city in the spotlight for three days of music, dance and talent. Derry’s newest open air concert venue, Ebrington Square, will be packed to capacity with music fans from all over Ireland, the UK and beyond, as they descend on the city for the unique music celebration.
It’s the second time the city has played host to the event - the first location to ever get an encore - and locals still recall the party to end all parties at Prehen Playing Fields in 2004, when the sun shone on over 20,000 revellers who came to see Faithless, Keane, Franz Ferdinand and a whole host of big 90’s names. Radio 1 Big Weekend is the highlight in a jam-packed line up of cultural events being held in the city throughout 2013. Other amazing highlights include the Fleadh Ceoil in August, the Lumiere festival of light, and the Turner Prize. For a full programme of 2013 events, go to www.cityofculture2013.com
