Section A - Floral DisplaysFloral displays contribute greatly to appearance throughout the Derry City Council Area, through the provision of hanging baskets, precinct planters and bedding displays within our parks, cemeteries and roundabouts. In addition Derry City Council has successfully managed a “Sponsor a Roundabout Scheme” for the past 6 years. This scheme has contributed greatly to the overall visual quality of many of the city’s roundabouts. This public/private partnership initiative demonstrates Council’s commitment to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the city’s green space. Council currently maintain 405 hanging baskets and 20 precinct planters to enhance this public realm. Of these 120 baskets and 10 precinct planters and 34 walled hanging floral baskets have been funded. Council has also secured sponsorship for ‘Welcome’ carpet bedding displays themed on celebrating the forthcoming Armada Exhibition. Council recognise the important contribution that public and residential
buildings and their environs make to the aesthetic quality of the city.
Council actively encourage its partners, private organisations and individuals
to enhance the appearance of their premises and aim to act as a catalyst
for the development of future floral initiatives, ie Shop Front Enhancement
Scheme and Best Kept Garden Competition and City Centre Floral Competition.
By way of example, the City Centre Initiative encourages the participation
of private businesses in their annual Floral Competition, to which on
average 60 entries are received annually. A more recent scheme is “Paint a Planter”. This involves the active engagement of children and young people in the design and painting of precinct planter bases using a floral theme. The aim of this initiative is to involve local children in animating these planters through hands on participation supported by a local artist. Set against this backdrop, Council acknowledge the importance of privately owned and self initiated floral displays in contributing to the overall aesthetic quality of the city.
