New Recycling Centre Project For Learmount Forest ParkDerry City Council have been actively involved in the planning and construction of a new Recycling Centre in Learmount Forest Park. The project has been developed in conjunction with the Learmount Development Group, DARD Forest Service, Rural Development Council and Sustrans and incorporates the Recycling Centre into a village environmental enhancement scheme with walking, cycling, parking and picnic facilities. In addition the Centre will provide a facility for environmental education and awareness initiatives as well as showcasing local history wildlife and nature and development. The Centre is located within the forest adjacent to the main road and easily accessed by foot, bicycle or car. It is also located next to the children’s play area and at the strategic starting point for the forest walks. The facility will assist the local community in participating in environmental initiatives in a more convenient and formalised manner. Concepts used in both the design and construction will include sustainable building construction, minimisation of construction materials waste and use of renewable energies. Key to the development of the facility has been the construction undertaken with the local community on the project to establish their requirements. The Centre will provide facilities for the collection of plastics, paper, cardboard, steel and aluminium cans, glass, green and organic waste, timber, construction and demolition waste, electrical and white goods, scrap metals, textiles, paint, oil and batteries. Additional facilities will be added as recycling markets develop. Users are expected to arrive with their materials pre sorted and all materials will then be forwarded for reprocessing. It does not contain skips or containers for mixed waste designated for landfill.
