Derry City Council, Pride In Our City

Sow & Grow Horticulture Project

The project is on a four-acre site, which was part of the former Gransha Hospital farm and houses a large glasshouse and five poly-tunnels plus a potting shed.

Trainees attending Sow & Grow are people with either learning disabilities or mental health problems. The main aim of the project is to provide horticultural training in a work-orientated environment. This in turn improves confidence, self esteem, independence and individual potential that can lead to work placements.

The trainees grow all their own plants from seed or from cutting, giving a full selection of bedding plants and provide a service to the general public where they will fill hanging baskets and planters all year round. There is also a very good selection of trees and shrubs for sale, plus Christmas trees and festive wreaths at Christmas time.

Last year Sow & Grow won the Western Area Section for the best-kept day centre in the Northern Ireland Amenity Council sponsored by Shell NI Ltd. They also finished third in the Northern Ireland finals.
