Launch Of Greencare Pilot Project In The Derry City Council Area

Groundwork Northern Ireland is to implement an innovative, environmental regeneration programme across a number of local estates. The Greencare Pilot Project has been funded on a partnership basis by the North-West Development Office (DSD), Derry City Council and the NIHE and is described as an example of Local Agenda 21 in action.
Encompassing the principles of participation, consultation and partnership, this approach to environmental regeneration will further sustainable development within communities in the Derry City Council area.

The pilot project will enable selected estates in the Derry City Council area to become part of a decision-making process in their area on small-scale environmental projects and Landscape Designs/Projects Briefs for more developed ideas.

This pilot project will work with a number of communities, identified by the members of the steering group as meeting the selection criteria.

Estates Involved In Pilot Project And Types Of Work

· Coshowen – Creation of a community garden
· Norburgh-Marianus –Community Safety Project
· Lowry’s Lane – Consultation
· Linear Park – Community Arts Project (incorporating nature, the environment and women) and a consultation on potential uses for area.
· The Triangle – Creation of a garden feature for Community Centre along with conducting a survey of the estate.

The Greencare pilot project aims to:

· To build community capacity within the participating groups/areas.
· To develop/enhance partnerships between communities, statutory bodies and other parties
· To contribute to the regeneration of the environment in the participating groups/areas.
· To improve the reputation/image of the participating groups/areas.
