Derry Healthy Cities – Foyle Greener Place Initiative

This project, located at Fountain Hill, was part of a series of bids developed under the broad umbrella of Foyle Greener Places Initiative, a consortium bid being facilitated by Derry Healthy Cities. The partners in the project are Derry City Council, NW Development Offices, NI Housing Executive and Fountain Hill Residents.

The green space identified is in an area of high social needs and low amenity provision. The space in question experienced little or no levels of community usage and is as a result virtually derelict. However the growth of housing development in the area targeted, created the potential for this derelict site to become an oasis of green in a heavily built up area. We are confident that the developed site will also become a key recreational amenity for surrounding inhabitants.

The rationale behind Derry Healthy Cities’ approach to this project in first convening early meetings of the public sector partners was to develop their commitment to the long-term sustainability of the project sites. One key aim of the project has been to secure a statutory sector commitment to maintain the developed green space beyond the life of the NOF funding.

Finally this proposal has been developed to reflect the recommendations within the DTLR, “Green Spaces, Better Places”, Urban Green Spaces Taskforce interim report.
