Derry City Council, Pride In Our City

Section D - Local Environmental Quality

Local Authority - Environmental Promotions.

The Environmental Promotions Section of the City Engineers Department has responsibility for the publicizing and promotion of Council Services and policies in regard to a range of environmental issues. Issues addressed include, litter, indiscriminate dumping, dog fouling, recycling, reduction and reuse of waste through to vandalism and wider environmental problems such as water and air pollution.

In order to effectively promote Council’s policies Environmental Promotions Officers liaise directly with the various groupings within the community ie schools, community and environmental groups and the public at large.

By means of talks and presentations, hands on clean ups etc, painting/poetry/garden/tidy street competitions together with written information in the form of leaflet drops and posters.

This may then be followed up by a ‘hands on’ type project were pupils from the school will take part in a clean up or perhaps become involved in a poster or writing competition. Prizes and presentations ceremonies are also provided as an added incentive. All schools within the Council area are contacted on a yearly basis and made aware of this service.

This approach has been very successful and most schools participate annually.

Community groups are also engaged in a similar manner. This may include help in organizing a clean up through to assistance with a Tidy Street or Garden Competition. The popularity of this type of event has increased yearly with most communities participating at some level.
