City Centre InitiativeThe effects of the Troubles left a huge scar on business confidence, relationships and the built environment of the City Centre in Derry-Londonderry. A complicated set of issues require a creative and committed response. The City Centre Initiative (CCI) is a unique partnership between business, Council and NI government departments. Using the Strategy for the City Centre as its agenda, the CCI has been instrumental in bringing about changes in the physical, social and behavioural use of our historic City Centre – undertaking difficult work which addresses the political and environmental legacy left by the Troubles. The Initiative has played its part as full partners with Derry City Council on various floral programmes including the City Centre Floral Competition and the successful Ulster in Bloom campaign as well as environmental improvement projects and engaging business in playing a full and active part in improving the environment and performance. The Initiative recently won a Co-operation Ireland Pride of Place Award for it’s City Centre Rangers project as well as successfully bidding for funding to run the fly-posting initiative (launched in April) and a creative litter campaign with Catholic and Protestant Schools in June which let children explore the impact that litter has on the health and wealth of the City.
