Dr Mary Pat Kelly – Acclaimed researcher, film maker and author Mary Pat Kelly will talk on the US Marines stationed at Beech Hill during WWII. Mary Pat has worked with the veterans association to arrange tours to Derry for almost 1,000 veterans and their families. Find out why Derry was so important and the key role it played in shortening the way.
Dr Patrick Fitzgerald – One of the leading Irish Experts in Emigration Dr Fitzgerald works with the Centre for Migration Studies in Omagh. The purpose of his talk is to explore the important theme of human migration in shaping the history of the North West Region. Derry city acted as an important hub, attracting in migrants from a broad hinterland stretching from Sligo in the West to Dublin in the East. Patrick will uncover this story in a fascinating and engaging way.
Brendan McMenamin - The oldest continually settled site in Ireland, Derry boasts 6 thousand years of human settlement. Its multiple layers of history uncover many stories of cultural identity and belonging of people to this magical place. Brendan McMenamin, from Derry City Council, was part of the winning bid team for the successful City of Culture 2013 bid. Brendan will explore how 2013 will use the tool box of culture to explore and celebrate these existing cultural identities.
