Summary Development Proposals
St Columb’s Park has 32 hectares that create an unrivalled opportunity
for promoting excellence in leisure and sport through developing an exceptional,
yet under utilised parkland, into an inclusive, safe and shared civic
space for everyone to enjoy. Proposals include:
· An accessible shared civic space through renewed landscaping,
play and leisure provision,
· Better connections to the River and neighbouring development sites
and expanding the city centre,
· The re-orientation of the landscape to focus the hub of activities
through the geographical centre,
· A central lake or body of water to define the character of the park,
· The upgrading of the stream and a wetland area to form a key part of
the ecologically diversified park environment,
· High quality allotment provision,
· Maintaining the quality of woodland and providing additional open spaces
for leisure and informal play,
· Access over the railway to the shore providing greater access to the
water that will assist with providing a greater educational and environmental
role for the park,
· Play provision for Junior Play (1-7 year olds); Senior Play (7-12 year
olds) and Adventure Play/tree canopy assault course (12+),
· High Performance centres of sporting excellence for Judo, Soccer and
fencing,
· Proposed regional facilities for basketball, boxing and other sports,
· Opportunities to maximise community sports facilities
· Improved walking and cycling network in the city,
· Enhanced outdoor floodlit pitch provision for hockey, football, Gaelic
and Rugby,
· Options for campus facilities to assist with staging international
sporting events,
· Business services to support sport development and growth,
· An inclusive and reflective space for all age groups and sporting abilities,
