Publication of Independent Review

On Tuesday 29th May, Derry City Council agreed to initiate an independent inquiry into the temporary closure of City of Derry Airport. The Council commissioned an aviation expert through Airport Solutions Ltd, UK to undertake the independent review of the events and circumstances that led to the temporary suspension of the CAA licence for City of Derry Airport. The terms of reference for the review were to:

1) Examine the events/circumstances that led to the temporary suspension of the CAA airport licence,

2) Examine the Council’s response to the suspension of the licence,

The review should specifically focus on the Civil Aviation Authority conditions for the granting of an aerodrome licence.

These conditions relate to

  • Competency with regard to experience, equipment, organisation, staffing, maintenance and other arrangements to secure that the aerodrome and the airspace within which its visual traffic pattern is normally contained are safe for use by aircraft;
  • The aerodrome is safe for use by aircraft, having regard in particular to the physical characteristics of the aerodrome and its surrounding.
