The Charter for Inclusion

The Charter for Inclusion was one of the key proposals to emerge from the City Vision 2020 process.

During this process our citizens gave priority to the creation of an inclusive city that reflects principles of respect for the identity and ethos of all the communities it contains. The Charter for Inclusion reflects the civic aspiration for a city that genuinely provides opportunity for all, where there is respect for difference and where there is a common sense of belonging.

This Charter is a public pledge to support, promote and work to achieve and inclusive society that values and empowers people. It sets out five principles, which encapsulate the rights and responsibilities of individuals and organisations.

Individuals/Organisations who sign up to the Charter for Inclusion state their commitment to:

Equality: Equality of opportunity for all citizens, access to facilities and resources on an equal basis, equality of esteem for all and equality of civic political and religious rights.

Diversity: Recognising, encouraging, affirming and celebrating the richness of the various traditions, groups and communities in our society.

Interdependence: Acknowledging the rights of each individual to his or her identity and the obligations and commitments that we have to one another.

Responsibility: Respecting the rights of others and taking responsibility for our role in society.

Non-Violence: Promoting non-violence and preventing words, actions and behaviour that can damage, injure or deny the rights, safety and well being of others.

Who can sign up to the Charter for Inclusion?

There are no restrictions on who can sign up to the Charter for Inclusion – individuals, teams, schools, community/voluntary groups, public and private sector organisations etc. are all encouraged to sign the Charter and promote its five principles of:

· Equality
· Diversity
· Interdependence
· Responsibility, and
· Non-violence

All that is required is a completed application form, which includes a statement indicating your reasons for signing up to the Charter.

What is the benefit of signing up to the Charter for Inclusion?

The Charter is a declaration of commitment to the principles of equality, diversity, interdependence, responsibility and non-violence. As an employer, signing the Charter may help demonstrate to your employees, suppliers and customers your support for a workplace and city that provides opportunity for all and where there is respect for differences.

As an individual, school or community group the Charter for Inclusion allows you to make a public pledge to support, promote and work to achieve an inclusive society that values and empowers people.

Signing up to the Charter for Inclusion means that you will have a certificate, which can be displayed in your workplace/home/school etc and use of the Charter for Inclusion logo on your literature or correspondence.
