Good Relations Programme
Good Relations Strategy 2006-09The role of local authorities in identifying community and good relations issues, promoting good relations and providing leadership locally on strategic and local issues is constantly being developed. All local authorities have been asked to review and revise their Community Relations strategies in view of the part funding they get from the Community Relations Unit, operating through the Office of the First and Deputy First Minister. As part of this subvention from central government, local authorities are asked to produce strategy documents, that highlight needs and potential or real gaps in provision toward promoting better relationships in the community, or that might prevent dislocations before they become significant. The vision for Northern Ireland as produced by the Programme for Government is for “a peaceful, inclusive, prosperous, stable and fair society, firmly founded on the achievement of reconciliation, tolerance, and mutual trust, and the protection of human rights for all”. The Northern Ireland Office “A Shared Future” report wants a vision of a “peaceful society in which everyone can freely and fully participate, achieve their full potential, and live free from poverty.” All local authorities now participate in the District Council Community Relations Programme that began in 1989. The Programme aims to develop community relations at a local level. In addition local authorities are also tasked with ensuring compliance with equality obligations both in the external provision of services and in the internal operation of the Council itself. An audit identified Key Issues. The Strategy is based on six aims and a series of objectives for each aim, which leads to the Action Plan.
