Equality

In response to the Northern Ireland Act 1998, the Council has drawn up an Equality Scheme,  which sets out the Council's commitment to "having due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity" and "having regard to the desirability of promoting good relations." This document also establishes a plan for ensuring that equality issues are mainstreamed in the Council's decision making.

In order to help achieve these objectives, the Council will, as appropriate, undertake screening, equality impact assessments and monitoring to establish the impact of our policies.

The draft Equality Scheme, which was one of the first local government schemes approved by the Equality Commission, is available free of charge in a range of formats upon request. Copies can be obtained by contacting the Equality Officer.The Council has also prepared a leaflet and booklet entitled "Statutory Equality Duties" and "Equality Scheme-Summary" respectively to help summarise and explain more clearly the Council's equality duties and the contents of our Equality Scheme.
