Energy

Climate change is the most critical threat to the sustainability of our planet and that the health of millions of people is at risk from rising temperatures, increased disease, more frequent and extreme weather events and rising sea levels. Achieving emission reductions of at least 50% worldwide will be necessary to alleviate the problem. This requires a significant and immediate commitment by a true worldwide partnership of national governments, local governments, citizens and businesses.

The Government committed to reducing the UK’s carbon emissions by 20% by 2010 from 1990 levels, however must be done.

Government Targets

  • The government is committed to reducing carbon emissions by 60% by 2050 with an interim target of between 26% and 32% by 2020.
  • In November 2006 a Climate Change Bill was announced to formalise these targets into legislation and to set up a Climate Change Commission to monitor progress.
  • Beginning with the period 2008 – 2012, the government will set five year carbon budgets for industry and the public sector limiting carbon emissions.

Council has resolved to play a positive role in educating, promoting and encouraging sustainable energy and energy initiatives in the wider community, through association with citizens interest groups, schools, the business community and Government
