Adapt to Survive – Derry City Council highlights the evolution in its approach to supporting business & the local economy
There is no denying that times have been tough but there are reasons to be optimistic. Derry been awarded the title of ‘Most Enterprising Place in Northern Ireland 2009. It is also a finalist in the Enterprising Britain Competition 2009. This is a testament to the ‘can do’ attitude of many of our local entrepreneurs.
Council has a strong track record of working in partnership to deliver economic growth and outlined below are some of our current programmes.
On-line Marketing Programme
In November Derry and Strabane Councils will launch a new ‘Online Marketing Programme’ for micro enterprises. This will provide eligible companies with the opportunity to have a professional website designed to market products and services. This will be augmented by intensive seminars to provide guidance on cutting edge, cost effective techniques of turning on-line marketing into sales.
Direct International Connectivity
Council is maximising the benefits of Project Kelvin, a €30M project to connect the region with the transatlantic telecommunications network. Council and its partners are leading efforts to promote Derry as a new hub for global commerce and digital media at the heart of the world telecommunications network. We want to ensure that local businesses can share in this vision and seize opportunities presented.
Motivational Business Series
Council and the Londonderry Chamber’s current ‘Motivational Business Series’ is a direct response to requests from local companies to learn from successful entrepreneurs. Look out for the next event in early December, with speakers Siobhan McAleer - Mortgage Shop and John Rice - Jam Media.

While there is a mood of optimism, Council understands that many people have suffered the plight of unemployment. However, we are working in partnership with businesses to provide training and employment opportunities through programmes such as the Kick Start to Work. FirstSource recently employed 20 people through the programme. Employers in retail, health and manufacturing are encouraged to contact Council to participate in this programme.
Tourism Development Strategy –Focus on the Future
Council is rolling out an ambitious new Tourism Development Strategy focusing on enhancing the profile of Derry as a “must see” destination and as a regional hub for tourism.
