Council Committees

Each Chief Officer provides reports to one or more of the seven Standing Committees of Derry City Council.

These committees are:

Committee Structure
Council

All of the Council’s activities are grouped under 7 Standing Committees. Each Standing Committee meets monthly and reports to the monthly Council meeting, where each Committee recommendations are discussed for adoption as official Council policy. The monthly Council meeting is presently held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 3.30pm.

Below you will see, for each Standing Committee, details of meeting dates and major functions.

Planning Commitee

Meets first Tuesday of each month

Major Functions Meets first Tuesday of each month

  • To consider recommendations of DOE Planning Service on planning matters and to represent your views as the local electorate.
  • To consider Planning Policy issues.

Recreation and Leisure Committee

Meets Thursday after first Tuesday of each month

Major Functions

To recommend policies and decisions to Council on a range of programmes including:
  • Community Services
  • Sports and Leisure
  • Visual Arts
  • Performing Arts
  • Heritage and Museum Services


City Marketing Committee

Meets second Wednesday of each month

Major Functions

To recommend policies and decisions to Council on a range of programmes including:
  • Economic Development
  • Marketing Your City
  • Inward Investment Programme
  • Tourism Development

Environmental Services Committee

Meets second Tuesday of each month

Major Functions

To recommend policies and decisions to Council on a range of programmes including:
  • City Engineer’s Programmes
  • Environmental Health Matters
  • Building Control Matters
  • Licensing, regulatory and enforcement matters

Policy and Resources Committee

Meets third Tuesday of each month

Major Functions

To recommend policies and decisions on a wide range of financial, administrative and personnel matters.

Staff Committee

Meets the Wednesday after Planning Committee

Major Functions

To recommend policies and decisions to Council on a range of programmes including:
  • to determine policies in realtion to matter pertaining to the employment and retention of staff and to oversee the development management and implementation of these policies in line with stated corporate objectives. This includes responsibility for the determination of suitable pay and conditions, which are conducive to the effective working of staff and the efficient deleivery of public services.
  • to ensure compliance with EU Directives, statute regulations and Council policies as they apply to the employment and retention of staff.
  • to consider all issues associated in the effective management of change as determined by Council at Strategic, Managerial and Operational levels to ensure integration in all aspectes in the Management of Council business.

Airport Committee

Meets the Thursday after City Marketing Committee

Major Functions

The role of the Airport Committee is to recommend to Council policies and procedures for the safe and efficient operation of the airport ensuring compliance with licensing requirements of the Civil Aviation Authority and Department for Transport.
