Advice for Young People

No Tricks, All Treats Campaign

Enjoy Hallowe’en  Safely, Enjoy Hallowe’en  Sensibly, don’t let alcohol ruin it

Hallowe’en  is a time to dress up and to party with friends.  Over the last few years, we have worked hard to make the Hallowe’en  festival safe for everyone to enjoy.  Feedback from young people last year suggested that not enough of the events were aimed towards them.  Listening to this, we have changed the programme to include more bands both in the days running up to Hallowe’en  and entertainment after the fireworks.  For more information, check out the website or follow on Facebook.  We want you to enjoy Hallowe’en  but also to be safe and to behave in a sensible way so that you don’t ruin anyone else’s night.

Be Safe this Hallowe’en

Follow this simple plan to help you enjoy Hallowe’en  safely and sensibly.

You don’t have to drink alcohol in order to enjoy the night and in fact a lot of young people choose not to drink until they are over 18.  Drinking too much alcohol can be harmful in a lot of ways, not only to your body but also your life, your family and your community.  Alcohol can put you at greater risk of accidents and assaults and of getting into trouble with the police.  It can ruin your night as well as other people’s celebrations.

It is in everyone’s interest to make the Hallowe’en  Carnival a positive experience for all.  Carnival care can help you enjoy the event safely and sensibly.
  • Decide not to drink.
  • Know your limits.
  • Avoid alcohol when feeling down.
  • Do not mix drink and drugs.
  • Do not leave your friends.
  • Plan your safe journey home.
  • Make sure parents know your plans.
  • Have fun.
  • Arrange a meeting place (the Guildhall, the Diamond, the City Hotel etc) if you and your friends get separated.
  • Make sure your mobile phone is charged and if possible you have credit (however remember that emergency 999 calls are always free).

To ensure your safety, alcohol cannot be carried on the streets (and will be seized from anyone who cannot prove they are over 18), marshals, community safety wardens and police officers will be on duty and ID schemes will be operating in licensed premises.
