Facilities Management
The Derry City Council Offices at 98 Strand Road, built at a cost of £8,000,000.00 were officially opened on 3rd May 1996 by the then Mayor, Councillor John Kerr.
The exterior of the building is clad in White Wicklow granite and the building itself commands an impressive view overlooking the River Foyle. The building is made of five levels including a basement area. Level 3A contains the Committee Room and the Mayor’s Office with the Conference Room located on Level 5A. Levels 3 and 4 are joined by two bridges spanning the main reception area, which is finished from floor to ceiling in polished granite. Looking down on the reception area from a lofted display set in the ceiling are 80 colourful Coats of Arms representing many of the North West’s famous clans and families. Also contained in the reception area is a colourful display of stained glass which was presented to the Council by The Honourable the Irish Society.
The central light shows the Arms of the City together with the arms of the Honourable the Irish Society. The light to the left shows the supply ship Deliverance which was sent to the city just before the onset of the 1689 Siege. The light to the right shows the city’s Patron, Saint Columba and his followers en route to Iona.
The Anchor located outside the riverside entrance was a gift from the citizens of Lemvig, Denmark, to the citizens of city in February 1990 and symbolises the friendship between our two communities.
