Sports Development Services

Urban Gaelic Games Programme

A joint initiative between Derry County Board, Ulster Council of G.A.A. and DCC which aims to promote GAA in the major population centre of the county.

The service provides free weekly coaching to Primary schools P5 class of Fundamental Gaelic skills with the emphasis on developing physical literacy, balance, co-ordination, agility and speed (ABC'S) by giving children the opportunity to sample Gaelic games in a familiar and fun environment they are encouraged to take a step further and join their local GAA club to further develop their skills.

Outer North Fit Futures Project

The "Fit Futures" Project for the Outer North Neighbourhood Renewal Area (NRA), works both directly and in collaboration with other service providers in education, health promotion and community to:

  • Improve the health and well-being of young people under 15 as an underrepresented group through the sustained participation in sport, physical activity and active lifestyle activities
  • Develop capacity and build community participation and cohesion in the community by way of promoting volunteering and active citizenship to support the programme
  • Utilise the programme to assist young people to enhance their self-esteem and emotional well-being.

IFA Grassroots Development Officer for Derry City Council

Helps to develop grassroots Association Football throughout the Derry City Council area, in accordance with policy for good practice outlined by UEFA (Governing Body for European Football)

The IFA/DCC grassroots programme is one of 16 across Northern Ireland. The 4 main objectives of each centre are:

  • Introducing, increasing & sustaining participation at all levels in football
  • Developing players, coaches, teachers & volunteers within football
  • Using football to improve quality of life
  • Developing & supporting foundations for football

Waterside Community Sport Programme (Waterside Neighbourhood Renewal Area)

The Community Sport Programme aims to improve the health and well - being of individuals and build community cohesion through the increased participation of children, young people & adults in areas of high social need and groups traditionally marginalized in sport & physical activity. It aims to;

  • Increase levels of sustained participation in sport and physical activity among underrepresented groups;
  • To improve the health & well being of programme participants
  • To develop capacity and build community participation & cohesion;
  • To establish and support the development of structures to sustain longer term provision for the Community Sport Programme across Northern Ireland
