Press Release‘A Day of Reflection’Wednesday, 30 November 2005A ‘Day of Reflection’ is to be held in Guildhall Square on Saturday 10th December 2005 at 1pm. It is a civic event jointly organised by the Day of Reflection Advisory Group consisting of the Office of the Mayor, Derry City Council, the Junction, Holywell Trust and a number of individuals. Everyone who wishes to attend is welcome.
“In memory of all of those who have lost their lives as a result of war and conflict from and within the city and district.” The Day of Reflection will serve as a means of reflection and recognition of the suffering of everyone who has been affected by war and conflict in and from the city. It is an inclusive, non-hierarchical, civic event in its form and content, established to provide public space for all in the community who lost loved ones and to remember those who died as a result of war and conflict. It will act as a reminder of the pain and suffering experienced by our citizens, and in remembering tragic events of the past, hopefully prevent them from recurring in the future. Through a sensitive process, the event will honour the fact that people are being asked to come together to freely reflect and remember what is important to them, both individually and at the collective level. It will be respectful of people with different views and perspectives of war and conflict. The Day of Reflection does not replace other existing commemorative events.
