Householders urged to recycle Christmas Trees

Wed 29th Dec 2004

Derry City Council is urging householders to participate in this year’s Christmas Tree Recycling Scheme by depositing of their used Christmas trees at any of the Council’s civic amenity and recycling sites.

The Chairman of the Environmental Services Committee, Councillor Gerard Diver said it was important that everyone participated in recycling following the Christmas period.

“The Christmas holidays are coming to an end and as we are thinking about going back to work and school, I would encourage as many people as possible to avail of the Christmas tree recycling scheme and dispose of their tree in an environmentally friendly way.

“Every householder experiences a huge increase in household waste each Christmas and I believe the Council’s tree disposal service and the Blue Bin initiative goes a long way towards making recycling easier than ever. I would ask everyone to keep thinking positively about recycling and to keep using the vital public services that are being provided,” he said.

The Christmas Trees can be deposited at any of the city’s amenity recycling centres where they are shredded and used as compost around the city’s parks. Opening times at the Council’s five Amenity Recycling Centres have recently been extended and this is also expected to assist the public greatly over the festive season. The centres located at Pennyburn Industrial Estate, Brandywell Show Grounds, Glendermott Road, Eglinton and Claudy will now be open to the public from 8.30 a.m. through to 5.00 p.m. inclusive Monday to Saturday.

Facilities are also provided for the collection and recycling of the following materials at each site – newspapers/magazines; cardboard, glass and plastic bottles, engine oil, vegetable oil, car batteries, scrap metals, textiles, tins and cans and fluorescent tubes.

Anyone with questions regarding Recycling should contact the Helpline on (028) 7136 8550 where staff are on hand to provide assistance and answer any queries.
