Mayor pledges support following Tsunami Disaster

Wed 29th Dec 2004

The Mayor, Councillor Gearoid O’hEara has expressed his heartfelt sympathy and sincere condolences to those affected by the tragic events in Asia over Christmas, in which over 60,000 people were killed in a Tsunami disaster.

The Mayor, speaking on behalf of the people of Derry and the North West Region said he was “shocked and saddened” at the horrific scenes of devastation he witnessed. He commented:

“ This is a terrible disaster and one which has struck a chord with people all over the world. I will be contacting Trocaire and the other relevant relief agencies with a view to establishing a fund, which will offer practical support and help at this crucial time.

The people of Derry and the North West are renowned for their generosity and kindness, and I am confident they will be most generous in their support for the people of Asia. What is needed now is the provision of clean drinking water, medical supplies, clothing and food items, and I hope that we can all contribute to helping these people in their hour of need.”
