Press ReleaseCity Marketing Chair plans ahead for New Year’s ResolutionsWed 29th Dec 2004The Chairperson of the City Marketing Committee, Councillor Helen Quigley has emphasised the importance of securing investment and development for the North West region during 2005. She commented: “During the Christmas break it is important that we reflect on the city’s economic priorities, with a focused list for the New Year of what the city needs to achieve. “As Chair of the City Marketing Committee, it is imperative the relevant agencies and statutory bodies during 2005 bring equity to the funding available by Central Government by improving the local infrastructure and encouraging greater investment for employment in the region. “Among the developments the city should prioritise for achievement in 2005 is the commencement of an advanced research centre at Magee and the announcement of stage two of the development plans for the campus. I also hope to see the publication of a strategic development plan for the University of Ulster at Magee and the successful delivery of Ilex’s masterplan, which will see the regeneration of the city’s riverside corridor. It is also vital that we work to initiate the decentralisation of local government jobs to the city. “It is vitally important that the Council can successfully deliver a timeline on the regeneration of the Waterloo Place and Guildhall Square area of the city, establish a managed market in the city centre and a development plan for Boom Hall. I would hope to see the implementation of a new visitor welcome plan for the city and increased investment in the city’s tourism venues so we can further promote the city as a good place to visit. One of the most important projects currently being undertaken by the Council is the development of an investment plan for the City’s Built Heritage. I believe it is imperative that this project is built upon and developed further so we can work to promote and market the city’s built and walled heritage. “The city faces challenges in many areas but I feel that a cohesive and concentrated effort from all agencies involved in economic development and regeneration that we can make great achievements in 2005” Ends Further press information can be obtained by contacting the City Marketing Department at Derry City Council.
