Press ReleaseMajor investment in fire safety at the City of Derry Airport29th December, 2004The Airport Authority has invested over £800,000 in fire training facilities with the installation of a new state-of-the-art aircraft fire simulator and the purchase of a new major fire appliance.
Welcoming the investment, the Chairperson of the Airport Committee, Councillor John Kerr said the investment demonstrated the Airport Authority’s commitment to fire training and safety. He commented: “The fire training simulator is one of the most modern and state-of-the-art facilities in UK and Ireland and provides fire fighters with the most up-to-date facilities for realistic fire training. The new fire appliance is a welcome addition to the existing fleet and will allow the airport to accept larger aircraft types over the coming years.” Leslie Beattie, Fire Service Manager, said he was delighted to have secured the simulator and the new fire appliance. “It is obviously a great boost to the fire service training and allows us to provide realistic fire scenario training for our crew of 25 fire-fighters. The fire simulator was installed over the past few months and came into service on 01 December and meets all international airport fire training requirements. Our new major fire appliance is currently undergoing airport familiarisation training will enter service on 01 January 2005 and will provide a greatly enhanced rescue and fire fighting capability,” he said.
