Business as usual for the Walled City Market this weekend

Wednesday, November 29, 2006

It will be business as usual for the regular monthly Walled City Market, which returns to Guildhall Square this weekend, Saturday 2nd of December. The market will be open for business from 9am until 4pm with over 20 participating market traders offering a wide range of organic and speciality food products.

The aim of the Market is to provide an opportunity for local producers to trade on a regular monthly basis and to promote the sale of quality produce.

The Council has plans to expand the market further and has recently taken delivery of a number of high quality bespoke stalls. These stalls will enable the council not only to increase the number of traders participating in the event but also to increase the range of goods sold.

Encouraging the public to come along and enjoy the excellent array or produce available said: . “The monthly market is an excellent event and there will once again be a mouth-watering array of fresh produce stalls ranging from organic produce, poultry, vegetables, traditional breads, mussels, olives and cheese.”

Chairperson of the Councils Development Committee, Cllr Maeve Mc Laughlin, said “The previous markets have been a tremendous success. Everyone who came along on the day was very impressed with the fantastic array of fresh produce stalls that were selling organic produce and traditional and exotic foods. I feel that the monthly market will be an important part of Council’s ongoing plans to revitalise the Walled City.”

Kevin Hickey, Marketing Manager with Northwest Organic said: “ We are delighted to be part of this prestigious event, members of Northwest organic have attended all of this year’s events and have been impressed with the range of products available and the public interest generated. Northwest organic welcome the opportunity to market our local organic produce and hope that the Market will become an important fixture in the Derry events calendar.”

There will be another chance for the public to purchase home-made products at the Christmas Speciality Market which will take place on 23rd December.

The Walled City Market is supported by the Building Sustainable Prosperity programme under its Local Economic Development measure and is administrated by the Department for Enterprise Trade and Investment.
