Public Encouraged Not To ‘Waste’ A Chance To Protect Their Homes

Monday, 29 June 2009

To remind householders to Close it, Lock it, Check it, Derry District Policing Partnership will deliver a bin sticker to every household in the Council area. This will ensure that every homeowner has the chance to place the message where all householders have access - their bins!

Derry District Policing Partnership has arranged delivery of the A5 sticker to all homes in the Foyle area. The bin sticker will be delivered over the summer months as a reminder to homeowners to secure their properties, especially when they go on holidays.

Cllr Elisha McLaughlin, Chairperson of Derry District Policing Partnership said.

“We are fully supportive of the campaign to raise public awareness of the need to keep homes safe. In the last number of number of months we have witnessed an alarming increase in domestic burglaries in Foyle. Many of these crimes are opportunistic and are easily avoidable. The bin stickers provide a handy reminder of the need to take a few simple steps every day to keep your home secure from criminals.”

Offering his support to the initiative, Foyle Area Commander, Chief Inspector Chris Yates added: “This sticker is a simple way to remind householders to close their doors and windows, lock their doors and windows and check their home is secure. When putting the bins out, householders will be reminded that before they leave their home or go to bed, they should take these simple steps to defeat opportunistic burglars. I would commend the local DPP on this innovative initiative.”
