Committee Meetings to Commence on Tuesday 02nd January

28th December 2006

Derry City Council committees will resume business next week with the Environmental Services Committee on Tuesday 02nd January at 4.00pm and Development Committee on Thursday 04th January 2007 at 4.00pm.

Members of the Environmental Services Committee will receive the monthly report from the Chief Building Control Officer along with matters relating to Air Quality Monitoring, Consumer Protection, Dogs NI Order, Health and Safety, Food Control and Derry Healthy Cities included in the monthly update from the Chief Environmental Health Officer.

At the Environmental Services Committee members will also be advised of proposals for street naming and postal numbering, Road Service information relating to Private Streets Order and Disabled Parking and a consultation paper on a Play Policy for Northern Ireland (OFMDFM).

Members will also be given an update on the implementation of the revised Building Regulations that came into force on 30th November 2006. Information relating to the National Fallen Stock Scheme will also be provided to members.

On Thursday 04th January, members of the Development Committee will receive an update on a range of areas including a presentation on the Draft Community Support Plan from William Consulting.

Members will also receive an update on the programme for the Flight of the Earls Commemoration Project in 2007 including a request to consider the staging of Brian Friel’s “Making History” at the Guildhall. There will also be a workshop programme for secondary level schools to accompany the play. Making History production is by Ouroboros Theatre Company in partnership with Grainan Theatre. The play was first performed at the Guildhall in 1988. The play is a core element of Heritage and Museum’s Programme for the Commemoration Project along with a lecture series and a travelling exhibition from Donegal County Museum.

Members will also be asked to consider the proposal to host the 2007 Tionol Symposium of the Folklore of Ireland Society. It is recommended the Heritage and Museum Service will support the project as it builds upon their archival work in the recording and collection in the field of gathering reminiscences and artefacts.

Members will also consider a proposal for a special meeting of the Development Committee in February 2007 for the grant aid programme 2007-8. They will also be updated with the level of grant aid applications made by Derry City Council to the Sports Council Northern Ireland Capital Fund since 1995 along with a recommendation to review the forthcoming capital projects for council to ascertain which may be suitable to achieve funding from this source.

A series of locations for a city centre skateboard park will also be considered at the Development Committee meeting to ensure the provision of a suitable park can be achieved.

Members will also be asked to approve expenditure in relation to the masterplan launch of St Columb’s Park, Derry City Football Homecoming Celebrations, Banks of the Foyle Hallowe’en Carnival and the Derry Healthy Cities initiative with Oakleaf Medical Practice for physical activity.

Members will also be asked to formally approve the appointment of architects involved in the City Walls Environmental Improvement Works and to consider the report of the meeting of the North West Region Cross Border Group.
