Press ReleaseMayor Concerned At Proposed Job LossesMonday, 27 November 2006The Mayor, Councillor Helen Quigley has expressed concern at news that up to 30 jobs may go at the local branch of Budget DIY. Budget DIY, which has six stores across the North, has gone into administration and up to 200 jobs are in jeopardy. While there has been no confirmation of the job losses or store closures, it is understood that staff at the stores were told the news last Friday and that the administrators would be issuing a statement later today. Offering her full support to workers affected by the job losses, the Mayor said she would be lobbying on their behalf to ensure a full package of support is put in place to help them achieve new employment. She commented: “News of these proposed jobs losses is another blow to our local economy. Our city cannot sustain the continuous haemorrhaging of jobs. What is needed is a unified approach from all the relevant bodies so that we continue to put pressure on central government to attract new jobs and protect existing ones while lobbying to secure the investment we need to develop this city as a regional centre.” She added that she was disappointed at the way in which this matter has been handled and called on the company to make public its plans for the future. “The staff deserve to know what is happening and whether or not their jobs are safe. This is a very unfortunate situation and my thoughts are with the workers and their families who are affected. This is terrible news just a number of weeks before Christmas.” Ends Further press information can be obtained by contacting the Marketing and Communications Section, Derry City Council.
