Press ReleaseFrom Mayor Paul Fleming27th May 2010Derry City Mayor Paul Fleming has called on all statutory agencies to increase their support for organisations which provide aid for drugs and alcohol addiction victims. Mayor Fleming said: “Whilst there are a number of local organisations providing much needed support to victims of drugs and alcohol addiction it is clear that more resources need to be put in place to respond to crisis situations. “It must be the responsibility of statutory agencies and public bodies to ensure that the adequate infrastructure is in place to address the consequences of addiction and I would hope that Derry City Council can play its part in responding to this serious situation. “In October 2008 Council agreed in principle to transfer lands at Boomhall to the Northland Centre for a purpose-built facility and officers have been working to bring forward recommendations which will serve to implement this decision. “As Mayor of the city and district I look forward to Council being able to offer practical support to the Northlands Centre in the very near future which, in turn, can hopefully provide the type of facility which is so obviously required for some of our citizens. I would like to congratulate Council for its proactive approach to what is a very difficult issue and I would encourage other statutory agencies and public bodies to also play their part,” he concluded.
