Call for community to help rid city of Drug Dealers

The first in a series of leaflet drops targeting hotspot areas for drug dealing/taking is due to take place in the city over the next few weeks. The information leaflet encourages people in the community to ‘Break the Silence and Stop the Drug Dealing in Derry/Londonderry’ and is a follow up to the regional Crimestoppers Anti-Drug Dealing Campaign several months ago. The campaign has been put together in partnership with Crimestoppers, the District Policing Partnership and Community Safety Partnership.

Speaking about the campaign, Alderman Drew Thompson, chair of the CSP, says “The Crimestoppers Charity enables people within the community to help rid it of criminal activity such as drug dealing. It is completely anonymous and has proven to be a very effective organization in the detection of drug dealers. We have a responsibility to protect our young people and children from the dangers of drugs and this is a safe and confidential way for anyone with information, no matter how small, to pass it on and help make a positive difference to the lives of our young people. ”

The national charity, Crimestoppers, has been successfully fighting crime for 21 years, with the service operating in Northern Ireland for 10 years. It is not, as many people think, linked to the police. Crimestoppers anonymity promise means that no personal details are taken from the caller, no calls are traced or recorded and people are not required to give evidence in court. Only the information about crimes is passed onto the relevant authorities.

Supporting the ongoing fight against the supply of illegal drugs, Alderman Joe Miller, chair of the District Policing Partnership stated: “Local public consultations carried out recently by the DPP show that the availability of drugs in our neighbourhoods is a major concern for our residents. As a DPP we realise that the police can only tackle this issue with the help of the public and we would encourage anyone with information about drug dealing to contact the police or Crime stoppers.”
