Press ReleaseCall for Community Safety volunteersMonday, 25 October 2004Derry City Council’s Community Safety Partnership is seeking applications from nominated representatives from local community groups based in the Derry City Council area to serve as a member of the Partnership. The call comes following a series of advertisements in the local press. The positions for the voluntary sector have already been filled and applications from the community sector are urgently being sought. John Kerr, Chairperson of the Community Safety Partnership explained that successful applicants from the community sector would work to assist the Partnership to develop, administer and co-ordinate a Community Safety Strategy for the Council area. He explained: “Community safety means preventing, reducing or containing the social, environmental and intimidatory factors which affect people’s right to live without fear of crime and which impact upon their quality of life. Improvements in community safety within the Derry City Council area cannot be delivered by a single agency and therefore it is important that representatives from local community come forward to assist us in working together to tackle the negative impacts that crime and safety issues have on the quality of life of the people living and working in the Council area.” “Successful applicants will be asked to commit a minimum of two hours per month for the next two years. It will be a challenge for the members but a rewarding and worthwhile experience for those involved. We anticipate a lot of interest and look forward to moving ahead with the development of a Community Safety Strategy,” he added. Those interested in becoming a member of the Community Safety Partnership should contact the Community Safety Co-ordinator, Derry City Council at 028 71 365151 for an application form and information on the selection criteria. All applications must be received no later than Wednesday 3rd November 2004.
