Press ReleaseDiverseCity exhibition at the JunctionFriday, 25 AprilA unique exhibition aimed at exploring and celebrating the cultures and traditions of ethnic minority groups in the Derry City Council area will be on display at the Junction, Bishop Street, during Community Relations Week (26 April - 03 May). The Mayor, Alderman Drew Thompson will officially open the exhibition on Monday 28 April at 2.00 pm. Welcoming the exhibition, the Mayor said the Diverse City Ethnic Minorities Exhibition is a unique exhibition, which challenges the stereotypical perceptions about local ethnic minority communities, migrant workers and racism. The exhibition, which is on public display daily throughout community relations week, is free and the local community are encouraged to attend. The exhibition was created by Derry City Council’s community relations officers with input from members of the Foyle Multi-Cultural Forum and the Walled City Neighbourhood Initiative. “Our community is changing rapidly,” explained Carol Stewart, Community Relations Officer. “There are 45 nationalities in our council area and 55 different languages spoken here. This exhibition takes the stories, histories, identities and cultures of some of those people and explores their impact in making our city a more diverse place to live. If community groups or schools would like to borrow the exhibition at a later date they should contact me - we would like to have it displayed in a wide range of venues over the forthcoming months.” Sue Divin is one of the Community Relations Officers with Derry City Council. “ This is an innovative and exciting exhibition aimed at making people seriously think about the issues of racism and the public’s perceptions of migrant workers and ethnic communities. Its an interesting exhibition which will get people thinking and talking about this issue which is something we would encourage.” Ends Photocall:Mayor Alderman Drew Thompson will officially launch the exhibition at 2.00pm at the Junction on Monday 28 April 2008.
