Conference to assist with dealing with the past

Wednesday 24th October 2007

Members of the public in the North West are being urged to have their say on how to deal with the past. A conference is being held in the city next month in an attempt to encourage people from all backgrounds with wide ranging opinions and experiences to come together and make their views heard and explore issues together.

The conference, which will take place at the City Hotel on Thursday 08 November between 9.15 am and 4 pm, is entitled “Remembering into the Future” and is a response to the current governmental consultation process on how to deal with the past. The event is being organised in a partnership between The Junction, Derry City Council, St. Columb’s Park House and the Old Library Trust healthy living centre. Bookings are being taken in advance on a first come, first served basis.

Urging the public to have their say and to get involved in the consultation process, the conference organisers said only with the input of local people can we hope to move from a divided past towards a positive shared future.

Members of the public wishing to attend the conference should contact Sue Divin at the Waterside Sub-office Derry City Council, 71 Spencer Road, BT47 6AE or email - sue.divin@derrycity.gov.uk - for an application form.

The independent consultative group on the past has been established to seek a consensus across the community on the best way to deal with the legacy of the past 40 years in Northern Ireland. The consultative group has now launched its public engagement and is seeking the views of individuals and groups on ways to achieve dealing with the past in the context of a shared future. Submissions have to be made in writing by 7th December 2007. Submissions can be made directly by anyone - this conference is only one way of making your opinions heard. Further details on this project are available on www.consultativegrouponthepast.org
