Press ReleaseMayor of Derry Catches Something Fishy For Christmas23rd November 04Gearoid Óh Eára, the Mayor of Derry was hooking a few of Trócaire’s Global Gifts at the Guild Hall on Tuesday 23rd November at the launch of the agency’s Christmas campaign. This year fish farms for families in Colombia are just one of the gifts being offered to shoppers all over Northern Ireland. Now in its fifth year, the campaign has been hugely successful throughout Ireland. The generosity of the Irish people continues to rise year on year. Throughout Co. Derry people have bought over 5106 gifts raising more than £119,118 for vulnerable families and communities across the world. “We would like to sincerely thank the people of Derry for their generosity over the last five years”, said Paul Kane, Fundraising Officer for Trócaire in Northern Ireland. “This year we are aiming to sell £503,000 worth of gifts across Northern Ireland and we are encouraging everyone to buy someone a gift that will help change other peoples lives for the better in parts of the developing world.” There are eight gifts on offer this year ranging in price from £10 to £100. The gifts include a clutch of chicks for families in Honduras, goats for poor communities in southern Africa and a survival kit for displaced families in Darfur containing a clay stove, cooking utensils, soap, a water container and material for clothing. Speaking at the launch Mayor Óh Eára said: “I fully support Trocaire’s Global Gift Campaign and believe it is an excellent way of supporting vulnerable people in the developing world. The people of Derry are renowned for their generosity and I am confident they will embrace this charity campaign.
