Press ReleaseMilestone reached in Regional Waste ManagementWednesday, 23 AprilThe North West Region Waste Management Group has chosen a preferred bidder to develop a new landfill site for the region. After an extensive search and public procurement exercise, the North West Region Waste Management Group (NWRWMG) has indicated that a quarry at Cam Rd Coleraine has been selected as the proposed single new regional landfill facility and its owners, B. Mullan and Sons, have become the preferred bidder to develop and operate the facility. The provision of a suitable landfill facility is one of the pressing issues facing the Councils of the region and the decision to adopt a regional approach has been taken in line with the Councils’ North West Regional Waste Management Plan. The Plan advocates an approach to regional self-sufficiency as far as is practical and economical. Representatives from B Mullan and Sons recently presented to elected members from the Councils of the NWRWMG to outline their plans for the site and the stringent steps that will be taken to ensure compliance and best practice. The NWRWMG wishes to stress that the proposed site at Cam Road is the only site in the area that the councils of the Group are interested in seeing progressed through planning. The Group does not support any other site in the Ringsend district. The Chairman of NWRWMG, Councillor Tom McBride said, “I am delighted that we have made significant progress in securing this important site for our region. Although landfill is not an end in itself it does have a part to play as part of an integrated waste management solution and failure to meet our obligations under the EU Directive will result in heavy fines for the Region. That said, we are, as a group, committed to helping all our residents to reuse, recycle and compost as much as possible thereby reducing the overall amount of waste we send to landfill”. Mr. McBride added, “This announcement reinforces our commitment to our residents. Through waste reduction and minimisation programmes we’re not only helping to eliminate the potential financial burden to rate payers but also doing our bit for the environment”, he commented.
