Press ReleaseHuge Crowd Welcomes Santa to Guildhall SquareThursday 22nd November 2007Thousands braved the inclement weather conditions for the Switch On of the Christmas lights to welcome Santa to Guildhall Square on Wednesday evening (21st Wednesday). Santa was joined on stage by the City's Mayor Alderman Drew Thompson, Coronation Street’s Steven Arnold (aka Ashley Peacock), Everest climber Hannah Shields and Panto Stars along with Seanie O’Kane, from Big Brother.
Mayor, Alderman Drew Thompson said it was a fantastic family occasion with a great festive atmosphere, "The event was a very special occasion for everyone involved, there was a real festive atmosphere in the city centre and I was delighted to see so many families throng Guildhall Square to enjoy the switch on and greet the special guests.”
The crowds enjoyed a special arrival by Santa from the City Walls aided by the local Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue service along with music from the Chevys. Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas from the stage Steven Arnold aka Ashley Peacock said it was great to be in the city, everyone was so friendly and the experience amazing.
Event Controller, Gerald McColgan from Derry City Council thanked everyone who assisted with arrangements for the successful event. "Record crowds this year filled the Guildhall Square and we were able to extend a festive welcome to Santa from Waterloo Place as the big screen relayed images of his arrival on the stage. It was a fantastic audience and Derry City Council and its partners would like to thank everyone who made it possible". The Mayor also added that the Christmas Switch On is one of a series of events that is being organised in the city during the festive period. He added: “The switch-on was one of a series of events in the city's Festive Time campaign. There's more for families to enjoy including choral performances at the Guildhall, iceskating in Guildhall Square, street performers and christmas market. There's alot to offer in the city and I hope everyone takes some time out to enjoy these events".
