Mayor hails Reception for education sector ‘a success’

Friday, 22 October 2004

The Mayor Gearóid Ó hEára has hailed last night’s Reception for school teachers and representatives of the education sector in the City Council area as a great success.

The event at the Everglades Hotel was organised by the Mayor to honour the contribution teachers make to the region and help make the case for Derry to be designated an Education Action Zone.

Mayor Ó hEára said:

“Last night’s event was a tremendous success with over 150 people from the education sector in attendance. Special guests on the night were Martin McGuinness MP, Sheila McCaul from WELB and Barry Mulholland WELB CEO, as well as representatives from primary and secondary education institutions, education unions and various political parties.

“It was a unique opportunity to allow me to pay tribute to the enormous contribution that our teachers make to the life of the North West and to lend my weight to the ongoing campaign for the city to be designated an Education Action Zone and to campaign for more targeted resources to be placed into education.

“All too often there is a tendency to take our teachers for granted and overlook all the work that is taking place around us. As Mayor I wanted to take the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution teachers make not just to the education of our children, but to the wider life of the city,” he said.
