Foyle cup a great boost for the city

The Mayor, Councillor Gerard Diver has welcomed the commencement of the 2008 University of Ulster Foyle Cup, which takes place in the city this week attracting 118 teams from four continents.

The event, which has been financially supported by Derry City Council, is one of the city’s key competitive football tournaments and is going from strength to strength each year in attracting youth teams from across the world.

This year’s event is the biggest ever and the Mayor is hopeful that it will be another tremendous success for everyone involved.

“The Foyle Cup is an excellent event for providing a platform for the city to showcase the range of facilities we have to offer and our ability to organise international sporting events. The event continues to make a significant impact on our economy with hotels and other accommodation facilities being filled to capacity over the duration of the competition. The Council is delighted to be associated with the event and remains committed to promoting sport and healthy living for young people.

“The tournament is a very special event, not only because it brings huge numbers of participants and their supporters to our city but it provides young people with a unique opportunity to represent their community and make new and lasting friendships as well as enjoy first class soccer, “ he added.
