Press ReleaseMayor Acknowledges Role of Teachers in Civic Life of RegionWednesday, 20 October 2004The Mayor Gearóid Ó hEára will this week host a Reception for school teachers and representatives of the education sector in the City Council area to honour the contribution teachers make to the region and help make the case for Derry to be designated an Education Action Zone. Mayor Ó hEára said: “I am hosting this event to pay tribute to the enormous contribution that our teachers make to the life of the North West and to lend my weight to the ongoing campaign for the city to be designated an Education Action Zone. “All too often there is a tendency to take our teachers for granted and overlook all the work that is taking place around us. As Mayor I want to make the extra effort to thank those who go the extra mile for our children. I also want to acknowledge the contribution teachers make not just to the education of our children, but to the wider life of the city. “As such I thought it both appropriate and worthwhile, whilst making the case for an Education Action Zone, to also take the time to thank, in this small way, all the men and women for their effort, work, commitment and dedication, people who open the door to the future for our young people. “Education is vital to the development of our city and region and the people who are at the coalface of educational delivery in this region are our teachers. This event is designed to raise the profile of the education sector in the district, and to say to all of our teachers, “Thank You.” ENDS Notes for Editors The Mayor is hosting a Civic Reception for the Primary & Secondary Education Sector on Thursday 21st October 2004.
