Press ReleaseAs I See ItFriday 20th June 2008This unique exhibition, entitled ‘As I See It’, features a series of portraits of ten people with autism, who are living in the UK, two of which are from Northern Ireland. Alongside these portraits are photographs taken by the individuals, which provide a fascinating insight into the experiences of people living with autism. Speaking ahead of the launch Mayor Councillor Gerard Diver said that this was an extremely innovative way to open people’s minds to the experiences of others. He continued “This is a beautiful exhibition with each of these people inviting us to see the world from their point of view. I would recommend that people support this unique event while we are fortunate to have it visiting the city.” He added “I would like to congratulate the Heritage and Museum Service at Derry City Council for the wealth of exhibitions currently on display throughout a number of museums in the city during the summer period. It’s wonderful to see so many cultural options on offer and I hope that visitors and locals alike take some time to enjoy them.” The ‘As I See It’ exhibition is part of a campaign by The National Autistic Society of Northern Ireland called ‘think differently about autism’ - which aims not only to raise awareness and understanding of autism, but to also change people’s perception of this disability. The exhibition will remain on display at the Harbour Museum until the 4th July. The museum is open weekly from Monday to Friday, 10am - 4.30pm (closed 1-2pm for lunch) and admission is free.
