Members of the City of Derry Civic Choirs and the WELB Youth Orchestra entertained the audience with a beautiful selection of Christmas music and carols. The Mayor, Cllr Helen Quigley said she was delighted at the success of the opening events including the time of reflection and thanked everyone who attended for their support. She said she hoped the series of outdoor events taking place throughout the week involving a range of school and community choirs performing in Guildhall Square, will be another tremendous success. Tonight, Tuesday 19 December, members of the Long Tower Junior Choir, the Nazareth House Primary School Choir and the Foyle and Londonderry College Jazz Ensemble, will be performing at 6, 7 and 8 pm respectively in Guildhall Square. On Wednesday evening, members of Steelstown Primary School Choir, St Columb’s College and Colmcille Ladies Choir will perform, while Ebrington Primary School, City of Derry Civic Junior Choir and Christian Brothers Choir will take to the outdoor stage on Thursday evening. The Christmas Festival will culminate in the Guildhall on Friday night, 22 December, with a magical performance of Handel’s Messiah by Codetta, the City of Derry Youth Choirs with Orchestra and soloists. Encouraging as many people as possible to come along to the outdoor and closing event performances, the Mayor said the Christmas Festival provided locals, shoppers and visitors with an opportunity to enjoy seasonal songs and music during Christmas week. “The weekend events were a great success in bringing people together to enjoy music and song and to take time out for reflection and reconciliation. I hope that the outdoor musical performances in Guildhall Square will be another great success ahead of the festival grand finale on Friday night which promises to be a truly festive and special experience for everyone,” the Mayor concluded.
