Council appeals for Quad and Scrambler rethink

Monday, 19 December 2005

Derry City Council have issued an appeal to parents and guardians who may be considering purchasing quads or scramblers for their children this Christmas to ensure that they are aware of the limitations to where the vehicles can be used and the subsequent dangers of their misuse.

Council’s Director of Development, John Meehan said that it was important that parents were fully informed before making their decision,

“Unless parents have access to an area of private land we would urge them to strongly rethink their decision to purchase a quad or scrambler for their children this Christmas. The use of quads and scramblers on Council parks and property, and public roads, is strictly prohibited with offenders liable of fines up to £1000. In the past this rule has been ignored resulting in the vehicles causing damage to Council grass areas and paths as well as endangering the safety of normal park users.

“In addition parents should know that these vehicles are not toys and if misused can cause serious injuries and fatalities in some severe cases. Each year Altnagelvin’s A&E department see some very serious injuries not only to the riders but to members of the public.

“In light of this we would appeal to parents and guardians who are thinking about buying a quad or a scrambler for their children this year to reconsider.”
