Press ReleaseNew Neighbourhood Watch scheme to be launched in EglintonFriday, 19th June 2009The number of Neighbourhood Watch Schemes in Foyle is set to increase with the launch of the Eglinton Neighbourhood Watch Scheme on Tuesday 23rd June. The scheme will be formally launched on Tuesday night at 7.30pm in St Canice’s Church Hall in the village. Neighbourhood Watch is one of the biggest and most successful crime prevention initiatives ever and is grounded in a partnership between the community, the police and other statutory agencies including the District Policing Partnership and the Council’s Community Safety Partnership. Neighbourhood Watch Schemes are not solely about reducing burglary or break-ins, they are also about fostering and growing communities who care. This point is emphasised by Jim Logue, Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator for the Eglinton Scheme who said, “Eglinton Village has a well established community spirit with many residents in the area having lived there all their lives. However, as PSNI restructure and reallocate resources there is a growing emphasis on the community taking a level of responsibility for the safety of their neighbourhoods and the people residing there. This has prompted us to establish a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme primarily to ‘keep an eye out for each other’. Apart from the obvious home security aspects of the scheme I feel that this initiative will also bring us all closer together and make a real contribution to the safety and well-being of the area.” PSNI Area Commander for Foyle, Chief Inspector Chris Yates commented, "I am delighted to see another Neighbourhood Watch Scheme being established in Foyle. Policing is more effective when the police and the community work together to create a safer environment for all. We would encourage everyone to take all necessary precautions to protect their home and personal property and to look out for each other."
